Complete Guide to Expressway Rules
There are two types of expressways: "National Expressways" and "Motorways (Automobile Dedicated Roads)". Rules like speed limits differ.
We've summarized the confusing points for the written exam.
1. Types of Expressways & Speeds
This is the most important point for the exam!
Rules differ significantly "when there are no signs".
| Item | National Expressway (Main Lane) |
Motorway (Dedicated Road) |
|---|---|---|
| Max Speed (General) |
100km/h *Except some vehicle types |
60km/h (Same as general roads!) |
| Min Speed | 50km/h | None (No regulation) |
Even on a Motorway (Automobile Dedicated Road), if a sign says "80", you can drive at that speed.
However, if there are no signs, the limit is "60km/h", just like general roads!
(e.g., Metropolitan Expressway, etc.)
🚗 Vehicles allowed 100km/h
- Large Passenger (Bus), Ordinary Passenger, Ordinary Cargo
- Large Motorcycle, Ordinary Motorcycle
- Large Cargo (Truck), Large Special
- Trailer (Towing vehicle), Three-wheeled vehicle
2. Prohibited Vehicles
Prohibited vehicles differ by road type. The 50km/h rule is key.
- Mini-cars
- Mopeds (50cc or less)
- Small Motorcycles (125cc or less)
- Small Special Vehicles
(Farm tractors, etc.) - Vehicles towing a breakdown car with a rope, etc.
Reason: National Expressways have a "Minimum Speed of 50km/h," so vehicles structurally or conditionally unable to reach 50km/h cannot enter.
3. Driving Rules & Prohibitions
📏 Following Distance Guide
Dry Road: Distance equal to the speed number (100m at 100km/h).
Rain/Worn Tires: About Double that distance.
- Keep Left: Generally, drive in the leftmost lane. (Do not stay in the passing lane continuously)
- Towing Vehicles: Trailers towing over 750kg must use the leftmost lane.
- Road Shoulder: Generally prohibited (Allowed only for stopping due to breakdown).
- U-Turn
- Reversing (Backing up) *Never back up even if you miss your exit!
- Crossing (Crossing lanes)
The following people cannot ride tandem (2-up) on expressways:
① Under 20 years old.
② Held license for less than 3 years.
4. Emergency & Breakdown Response
Stopping/Parking is generally prohibited on expressways, with these exceptions:
- Temporary stop to prevent danger
- Stopping on the shoulder due to breakdown
- Parking at SA/PA (Service/Parking Areas)
- To pay tolls
You are obligated to inform following vehicles that you are stopped.
Nighttime: Triangle + Turn on Hazard Lights or Tail lights.
Evacuation: Do not stay in the car; move to a safe place outside the guardrail!
- Fuel: Check to avoid running out of gas.
- Tires: Set pressure higher.
(Low pressure at high speeds risks "Standing Wave Phenomenon" leading to bursts) - Emergency Triangle: Ensure it is loaded.
Expressways are convenient, but ignorance of rules leads to major accidents.
Drive safely with correct knowledge!
