Intersections & Crossings Complete Guide!

Very common in written exams!
"How to turn at intersections" and "Railroad crossing rules". We've organized tricky points like pulling over for left turns and two-step right turns for mopeds.

How to Turn at Intersections (Cars)

The key words when turning are "In advance (30m before)", "Pull over", "Slow down".

⬅️ Turning Left
Pull as close as possible to the left edge of the road in advance, and slow down along the edge of the intersection.
*Pulling to the left is to prevent accidents involving motorcycles getting caught on the inside.
➡️ Turning Right
● Regular Road Pull to the center of the road in advance, and slow down just inside the center of the intersection.
● One-Way Road Pull to the right edge of the road in advance, and slow down inside the center of the intersection.
*For one-way roads, "Right Edge" and "Not just inside" are key points!

Moped Right Turns (Small vs Two-Step)

Only for Mopeds (50cc), the rule changes between "Small Turn" and "Two-Step Turn" depending on the intersection.

① Small Turn (Same as Cars)
This is the general rule. If there is a right-turn lane, enter it and turn.
② Two-Step Turn (Exception Pattern)
If either of the following applies, perform a "Two-Step Turn" where you proceed straight through the intersection and then change direction.
  • There is a traffic light AND a "Moped Two-Step Right Turn" sign.
  • There is a traffic light AND the road has 3 or more lanes on one side.
⚠️ Exam Trick Point!
Even on a road with 3 or more lanes, if the traffic light is a "Flashing Light (Red or Yellow)", it is considered that traffic is not being directed, so it becomes a Small Turn!

Priority at Uncontrolled Intersections

If cars meet at an intersection without traffic lights, who should yield?

  • 1. Priority Road is First
The side where the center line continues through the intersection has priority.
  • 2. Wider Road has Priority
The car on the clearly wider road has priority.
  • 3. Left Side Priority (If widths are same)
The car coming from your left has priority.

*If there is a "Stop" sign, of course, that side must stop and yield.
*If the other party is a Tram (Streetcar), the Tram has priority regardless of left or right.

Railroad Crossing Rules

  • 🛑 Stop Temporarily: Must stop just before the crossing.
  • 👀 Safety Check: Look with your eyes and open the window to listen for trains.
  • 💨 Pass Through: To prevent stalling inside, pass through the center quickly without changing gears.

Memorize exception rules thoroughly
so you don't lose points on the exam!
