MT Basics: Mechanism & Operations
For those removing AT restrictions or driving MT for the first time.
We explain the role of the "Clutch" and the feel of the "Half-Clutch" clearly with videos and illustrations.
MT Mechanism & Pedal Layout
In an MT car, you control the "connecting and disconnecting" of engine power with your own feet.
▲ Pedals from Right: Accelerator, Brake, Clutch
Role of Pedals
- Accelerator (Right Foot): To accelerate.
- Brake (Right Foot): To slow down or stop.
- Clutch (Left Foot): To disconnect/connect power.
Gear Change Basics
When changing gears, always press the clutch pedal all the way to the floor.

Starting the Engine & Moving Off
Master the hardest part of MT driving: "Starting (Half-Clutch)".
Steps to Move Off
- Press clutch and shift to Low (1st gear).
- Lightly press accelerator and slowly lift the clutch.
- Stop lifting when the sound changes at the "Half-Clutch" point.
- Once moving, release the clutch fully.
Shifting Up & Down
Select the appropriate gear for your speed.
- Shifting Up: You can lift the clutch quickly without holding at half-clutch.
- Shifting Down: Brake first to slow down, then press clutch and shift down before the engine "knocks" or shudders.
Stopping & Parking
Stopping Tips
Slow down with the brake, and press the clutch just before the engine struggles (about to stall).
Parking Tips
Before turning off the engine, putting the gear in Reverse (R) (or Low) prevents the car from rolling.
